Step off the well-trodden tourist trail and into a day of pure adventure in the Mae Taeng district. This full-day experience combines a challenging mountain trek, an exclusive visit to a remote Lahu hill tribe village, and a serene bamboo rafting journey through one of Chiang Mai’s most picturesque valleys.
Morning: Mountain Trek to a Secluded Lahu Village
Your day begins with a scenic 1.5-hour drive from Chiang Mai to the starting point in Mae Taeng. The trek starts with a steady climb through dense, green forest, leading you up to a mountain ridge where sweeping views of the Mae Taeng Valley stretch as far as the eye can see – the perfect spot for photos and a short rest.
From here, the trail descends toward the Lahu village, accessible only by foot or river. This 5 km hike includes about 300 meters of elevation gain and offers a true taste of off-grid adventure.
Cultural Encounter & Traditional Lunch
Home to around 200 residents, the Lahu village is a peaceful hillside community overlooking the river. Wooden stilt houses dot the slopes, and the quiet pace of life offers a glimpse into a way of living that has changed little over the decades.
You’ll be welcomed into one of the homes for a traditional lunch cooked over an open fire, then have time to wander the village paths and take in the tranquil surroundings.
Afternoon: Bamboo Rafting Through a Lush Gorge
After lunch, trade hiking boots for a bamboo raft as you set off down the Teang River. Drifting between towering mountains and thick forest, you’ll pass through sections of calm water broken by gentle class 1 and 2 rapids. Keep an eye out for vibrant birdlife and, if you wish, take a refreshing dip in the cool river.
Guided by a local boatman, you’ll also have the chance to try steering the raft yourself – an experience both fun and memorable. The rafting route covers around 10 km and ends at Sop Kai, where a vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Chiang Mai.
